CSK vs SRH highlights - CSK cruise to win in dewy Chennai

By Sidharth Monga

Gaikwad, Mitchell, Deshpande star in huge win

CSK move to No.3 on the table with this 78-run win. They are tied with SRH and LSG on points. We leave you with a teaser from our final report. Thanks for joining us.
Call them conservative, but Chennai Super Kings successfully backed their method despite not being able to defend 210 in their last home match against Lucknow Super Giants. The power-packed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s drought in Chennai continued as they fell short comprehensively despite batting in dewy conditions. The slowest team in the first two overs and the third-slowest in the powerplay, CSK looked like they were playing the same game again: lose their eighth toss in nine matches, lay a cautious platform, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring around a hundred, Shivam Dube pushing them over 200, but it changed in the second innings. CSK must have figured they got done in by excessive dew, a special innings from Marcus Stoinis and some ordinary fielding from themselves the other night, a combination of events that won’t repeat every night. On Sunday, it didn’t, after Tushar Deshpande rocked SRH back with three wickets in the powerplay. Both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma found the sweeper on the off side. The big win took CSK from sixth to third on the points table, tied on points with SRH and LSG. SRH were left with questions around their chasing methods: they have lost only one when defending but won only one when chasing. Their run-rate when chasing falls three points from the 11.74 in the first innings, and the average comes down from nearly 40 to 23.

Mitchell is ball magnet

5 Number of wickets, out of nine, that have fallen with a catch to Daryl Mitchell. He hasn't had to move more than a couple of feet for any of those

Have SRH got a chasing problem?

SRH have gone at 11.74 per over and averaged close to 40 per wicket when batting first. When chasing, though, they have taken just 8.85 per over, and lost wickets at 25 apiece. They have won four and lost one when batting first. When chasing, this is their third defeat in four attempts. This result will leave SRH, LSG and CSK at 10 points apiece in the third position. That is not the muddle they would have expected to be in after breaking so many records.

Klaasen goes

I mean the game was over long ago, but you can never be sure these days. With Heinrich Klaasen gone, though, the 96 required off 25 balls is next to impossible. Pathirana has struck again. Klaasen has to go deep into the crease to get under this yorker, but he still can't get enough power and elevation behind it. Caught at long-on.

Middle-overs squeeze

3 Number of boundaries in 8.4 overs since the end of the powerplay. They now need 105 in 32 balls with five wickets in hand

Pathirana takes out Markram

CSK have been on fire since the powerplay. Not that they weren;t before, but only one boundary has come in nearly five overs since the end of the powerplay. To top it off, Matheesha Pathirana has bowled a spectacular yorker to take out the middle stump of Aiden Markram. SRH 85 for 5 in 10.5 overs.

Jadeja bounces out Reddy

Ravindra Jadeja is into the game, and it is advantage CSK. In his second over, and he has not conceded a single boundary. The pressure shows even when he errs. He is looking to turn the bball hard but ends up dragging the ball down. Reddy gets a top edge on the pull, and SRH are 72 for 4 in 8.5 overs. Their win probability is down to 4%.

CSK take the powerplay

53 Number of runs, for the loss of three wickets, that SRH have scored in the powerplay. Now is the crucial team. In the last match, LSG didn't let the CSK spinners bowl. Can Jadeja bowl well enough to end up bowling more than four overs that he and Moeen managed in the last match?

Deshpande stuns SRH

An uuper-cut in the fifth over from Abhishek Sharma settles with the sweeper on the off side, and we have a game on. SRH are 40 for 3 in 3.5 overs. All three wickets to Deshpande. Now is the test of the SRH depth.

Head falls early

RCB got rid of Travis Head early through Will Jacks. CSK have Moeen Ali in their ranks but they have opened with Deppak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande. Head and Abhishek run away to a quick start but a slower wide ball with a deep cover in place has got Deshpande the wicket of Head. SRH 21 for 1 in 1.5 overs.
Deshpande is on a hat-trick with the wicket of Anmolpreet Singh, the Impact Player. Just a leading edge for a catch to extra cover. Just a little bit of shape away is enough to do Anmol in.

Dube, Gaikwad take CSK to 212

Ruturaj Gaikwad fell two short becoming the fifth man to hit back-to-back hundreds in the IPL. Shivam Dube went at two a ball. And yet, you would suspect SRH won't mind the 213 they have been set. It has been a good pitch, which will only keep getting better for batting with the dew. Have they got enough?
Daryl Mitchell says they will take 212 after having been put in. They back themselves to bowl well enough to defend this.
It seems CSK are playing the same game all over again: they started conservatively and scored 210 against LSG to eventually lose. They must be backing themselves to bowl better come dew. They must be telling themselves it took a special innings from Stoinis to beat them, and it can't happen every night.

Unadkat finishes well

The 19th over, bowled by Jaydev Unadkat. CSK have tried hard so far but SRH have been good defensively. Gaikwad is gassed, and he has been able to add just 48 off the last 27 balls he faced, which is slower than the first fifty he got. The Chennai crowd celebrates the wicket with four balls to go. That's because they want MSD. CSK 200 for 3.

No 20-run overs

3 Number of 20-plus run overs CSK have had this IPL. Even today SRH have done well to control damage whenever they have conceded boundaries in the first two deliveries. CSK 159 for 2 in 16. Gaikwad nearing another hundred.

Crowd as performers

The Chennai crowd this year has been a performer in its own right. Here is an observation from Alagappan Muthu at Chepauk.
We know the Chepauk crowd has a long and storied history of roaring for wickets of their own batters. Usually the guy coming in has funny pads and the number 7 on his back. When Mitchell was caught - even as there were deliberations about the no-ball - a buzz went around the stadium. It shows the extent to which that these fans have fallen for Shivam Dube that he is getting the Dhoni treatment. He walked in to the soundtrack from the Vijay movie Vettaikkaran which translates to the hunter. And ever since he's been on strike the people are chanting his name. Du-be! Du-be! Du-be!

Mitchell falls after fifty

Daryl Mitchell has gone for 52 off 32, hitting a Jaydev Unadkat full toss straight to deep midwicket. Gaikwad is going at a run a ball since his fifty: 10 off 10. CSk 126 for 2 in 13.3.

Fifty for Mitchell too

Daryl Mitchell has upped the scoring rate, and got to a maiden IPL fifty off 29 balls. However, Gaikwad has taken five after his fifty: adding eight off eight immediately after. CSK 123 for 1 in 13 overs. Can they get another 100 in the last seven?

Fifty for Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad's prolific season continues as he gets to a fifty in 27 balls. Like in the last game, he has scored at a higher rate than his team-mates. He brings up the fifty with a second six off Cummins' first over. CSK now 82 for 1 in nine overs. The other 27 balls have brought 31 runs including extras.

Finally a six

No sixes yet

0 Number of sixes hit by CSK in the first seven overs. Even in the last match they didn't hit a six in the first 10. CSK 59 for 1 in seven. They have hit 12 sixes in nine powerplays, SRH have 36 in eight.

Rahane's dismal IPL continues

Ajinkya Rahane is gone early again, trying to take Bhuvneshwar KKumar on. His 9 off 12 tonight takes his season tally to 170 runs at a strike-rate of just 123.18, which is not good enough for this high-scoring year.
CSK 30 for 1 after four overs.

CSK's run-rate in the powerplay this IPL. Only LSG and GT have been slower. Here, too, they have made a cautious start, making only one boundary attempt in the first two overs, bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Nitish Reddy. They are 13 for 0 in two overs.

The MSD watch

From Alagappan Muthu at Chepauk
Sooooo, the big screen put up a still of MS Dhoni walking and thats enough to set the crowd going. Right next to the picture is a measure of the noise. The decibels going up towards the high 110s. Good practice for next season? When he may or may not be here?

CSK lose another toss, inserted

1 Number of tosses CSK have won out of nine this IPL
Pat Cummins has called right, meaning CSK have lost eight tosses out of nine. As expected, SRH have opted to field with dew expected to play a big role in Chennai. This is a drier pitch than the usual Chennai pitch this year, according to Samuel Badree.
SRH have left out Mayank Markande for an extra batter.

Jadeja-vu all over again

Ravindra Jadeja is doing Ravindra Jadeja things again. Too good to be left out but also leaving you wonder if CSK are getting the best out of him. Here's Alagappan Muthu on Jadeja.
It is a bit ironic that at the exact time he has won a place in CSK folklore - even gaining a title that the fans only bestow upon their favourites - Jadeja is facing a crisis on not one but two fronts. First, the pitches in Chennai aren't offering their usual help to the spinners. He has come away wicketless in three of the four innings he's bowled at Chepauk. And second, his touch is a little off. Last season, Jadeja faced only 21 dots in the first 10 balls of his innings. This season, even though its only halfway through, that count is already up at 16.

Return of the Orange

Match number 46. It's CSK hosting the most exciting team of this year, SRH. CSK are coming off a loss at home against LSG. They also lost the first match against SRH. So a lot of corrections to make for them.
Again dew will be a big factor as it was the last time around when Marcus Stoinis single-handedly won LSG the chase. How will the side losing the toss manage a par score? How will CSK manage to control the big guns of SRH? Stick around for that and more.
